What to look for

  1. 1The corners of the mouth rise.
  2. 2The cheeks lift; the eyes may narrow.
  3. 3Small creases may appear beside the eyes.

The upward movement at the mouth corners is a useful starting point. Then compare the cheeks and the area beside the eyes with the neutral example. A change across several regions gives you more to observe than visible teeth alone.

Try this observation exercise

Look at the neutral face for a moment. On the expression example, trace the movement from each mouth corner toward the cheek. Switch faces and look for the same combination rather than memorizing one smile.

Compare with contempt

Compare with contempt: happiness usually lifts both mouth corners, while contempt emphasizes one side.
