What to look for

  1. 1The eyebrows lift into a curve.
  2. 2The eyes open wider.
  3. 3The jaw may drop, creating a relaxed mouth opening.

The eyebrows lift into a curve and the eyes open. In this pattern, the jaw can drop into a relatively relaxed opening. Compare that movement with the sideways stretch and additional tension used in the fear example.

Try this observation exercise

Look at the mouth before the eyes. Is the opening loose and rounded, or pulled sideways? Check the brows next. Using two regions helps you separate patterns that share the same wide-eyed first impression.

Compare with fear

Fear can look similar. Here, surprise has a rounder mouth and less tension between the brows.
